Where is Caroline? could be described as point & click adventure, a game genre that is as old as the computer mouse. Previous adventure games were mostly based on text (and often reffered as text-based adventure games), but with invention of computer mouse and graphic user interface (GUI) players and game developers gained completely different possibilities.
First of all they could see the places that the adventures took place, so did not had to depend on text descriptions. The second new factor was that the graphic side of the came became interactive - you could click on the image of door to open it or click on the item to pick it up. And the third important factor - interface became part of the game. The items or solutions could have been hidden within graphic side of the game.
In point and click adventure usually players had to solve the puzzles to progress, in Where is Caroline? you manage your own journey guided only by the informations that you will find along the way, that's why it cal also be described as travel game or interactive novel.
